I met Julie and Ian at a wedding that we shot in Anguilla in the spring and fortunately Matt and Ron were both still available for their wedding day.

They had such a great time working with Julie and Ian – they were all smiles telling us about the fun that everyone had that day.  Julie looked absolutely radiant.

In this shot, she awaits the moment for her father to walk her down the …

The hora – a desperately needed lesson in chair surfing

I don’t know what’s going on of late.  When I was a kid going to Bar Mitzvah’s and such there were never hora accidents.  People went up in a chair, they were bandied around a bit and then they came back down.  Simple tradition.  And with the exception of getting your toes stepped on pretty regularly – it was fun.

Recently, I’ve seen a number of hora accidents – including one bride getting tipped over and dumped head first right out of her chair from 7 feet up.  And we’re talking landing on her head.  Nothing kills a good hora like dumping a bride.  She was a real trooper and got right back in that chair and went up again.  But it had the possibility of being really ugly.

So in an effort to save everyone from the pain and embarrassment of dumping their honoree – here are the rules of lifting someone in a chair during the hora.

1.  Lend a hand.  Guys, it’s your responsibility.  You don’t have to be Jewish to pick up the chair.  And you don’t have to be a bodybuilder.   Don’t stand around  wondering if you’re going to get called on to participate – help.  You need at least six or eight guys of average strength per chair.  Preferably two per leg.

2.  Get a decent chair.  Never use a folding chair.  It really should be a chair with with arms.  If there are no arms, consider having your honoree straddling the chair and hold the back.  Note:  Moms don’t want to straddle chairs nor do most brides.  Go look harder for an arm chair.  Hopefully someone thought this through before the music started…

3.  Keep the chair tilted back slightly at all times.  Never let the chair tip forward or to the side.  This means that the people holding the rear legs can’t lift the chair as high as the guys in the front.  Pretty simple concept but pay attention to it.

4. Don’t overbounce.  It’s a celebration, not a mosh pit.  This is not an opportunity to show off your strength.  Don’t let a couple of cocktails make you an overeager bouncer.

5. Watch out for overhead items.  Don’t put the chair in the center of the dance floor if there’s a low hanging chandelier there.  Ouch.

6.  Slowly put down the back legs of the chair first keeping the same level of tilt that you had above.  Guys, be sure you don’t let the chair leg snag your jacket or pants pocket on the way down.

7.  Jew or gentile, if you’re not helping with the chair then you must sing.  It doesn’t matter that you don’t really know the words.  Few do in this country.  But there’s only 14 words in the entire song.   Learn to fake them with confidence.  They are:

hava nagila

Hava nagila הבה נגילה Let’s rejoice
Hava nagila הבה נגילה Let’s rejoice
Hava nagila ve nis’mecha הבה נגילה ונשמחה Let’s rejoice and be happy
(repeat stanza once)
Hava neranenah הבה נרננה Let’s sing
Hava neranenah הבה נרננה Let’s sing
Hava neranenah ve nis’mecha הבה נרננה ונשמחה Let’s sing and be happy
(repeat stanza once)
Uru, uru achim! !עורו, עורו אחים Awake, awake, brothers!
Uru achim b’lev sameach עורו אחים בלב שמח Awake brothers with a happy heart
(repeat line four times)
Uru achim, uru achim! !עורו אחים, עורו אחים Awake, brothers, awake, brothers!
B’lev sameach בלב שמח With a happy heart

The digraph ch is pronounced like the German ch after a back vowel, as in Bach.

OK, now let’s rejoice!

It’s great to have a suite like those at the Waldorf when you’re getting ready. There’s enough room to find some great angles on what’s going on.

a few moments from a few weddings…

It’s been a crazy busy summer and once again the blog has had to take a backseat to “work work”. As we begin to come up for air, I thought it would be nice to just catch everyone up with a few shots from each of the many events we did in the last few months.

If you had to script a shot to show that classic moment of tension just before the bride goes down the aisle I don’t think you could do much better than this image of Sarah lost in the moment. A mysterious hand adjusting her veil and that’s her father checking his watch in the background.

Ready or not…. here we come.

And what makes these images extra special is the fact that Sarah is the third generation in her family to get married in this church in Manhattan.

Daniella and Adam were high school sweethearts growing up in Livingston, NJ together. It was inevitable that they would tie the knot and have a great time doing it.

Stunning, right?

They really act like best friends. You can see it in their photographs.

But the coolest part? Knishes, Pastrami Reubens, Dr. Brown’s Black Cherry Soda and Egg Creams during cocktails! Awesome. Now either you appreciate this stuff or you don’t. Personally, this is how I get in touch with my roots. And if you’ve never had an egg cream with a pretzel, well – you gotta expand your horizons and make new friends. This is not for tribe members only.

Dinner service was stunning as well.

Lastly, I wanted to share with you some shots from Sayuri and Jeff’s Wedding at The Metropolitan Club in NYC.

Now while Sayuri looked stunning in bridal white …

Check her and her bridesmaids out in their Eastern garb.

Sayuri also wins the annual prize for best calligraphy. Such a wonderful dying art.

Even the cake was designed to match the outfits.

Such a pleasure to work with so many wonderful designers, caterers, artists, stylists – they just give us so much to work with!

kamm + omar – the wedding day

So what do you do when you want to get an eyeful of NYC on your wedding day?

First, you get a suite at the Mandarin Oriental so you have a sweet view of Columbus Circle and Central Park South.

Then you bring along your beautiful daughter Kienna (and her rabbit.)

Then you take a subway downtown….

Arrange for a private double decker bus tour for everyone in the wedding.

And then after the ceremony in the Central Park Conservatory Gardens, you arrange for a checker cab to take you to the Rainbow Room for dinner and dancing.

A perfect ending to a perfect day.

rumi + stephen – the wedding day

You may remember Rumi and Stephen from our engagement session awhile back up at The Cloisters. Well Rumi’s mother consulted the calendar and Rumi’s Happy Day in Japan was 5/17/08 so that’s when they choose to have their wedding.

On her wedding day, Rumi decided to get ready at the Hotel Gansevoort in the Meatpacking District.

Stephen and The Boys took the scenic route…

Below her father waits for the last guests to arrive before bringing Rumi into the church.

She and Stephen share a moment while the Abercrombie and Fitch guy lies stunned watching them.

How cute are the flowergirls in those dresses?

For a part of the reception, Rumi changed into a beautiful Kimono that required a dresser about 20 minutes to get her into. But it was stunning.

As was the view from the Manhattan Penthouse where the reception was held.

carrie + brian – the wedding day

Just wanted to quickly get a few images up from Carrie and Brian’s wedding.

Didn’t she look great?

These guys rocked!

But alas, I did find a backstabber among the guests…
