gwen and noelle are two of the sweetest children i have ever met. i had actually forgotten about this session – it was shot almost a year ago. i stumbled across it again today – the bold colors and bright smiles still hold their magic, making me wish i were 7 years old again.

how cool were helium balloons?! my brother and i used to write messages on them and release them into …

jen + david – the wedding day by matt

you might remember jen + david from the engagement session that I did with them in SoHo last year.

we had so much fun together but alas I was booked on their wedding day so they selected my associate matt as the lucky guy that got to shoot their wedding at the metropolitan club

i love the old world new york feel of stanford white’s metropolitan club.   i like it even more because it’s the type of club that wouldn’t have me as a member.

it was founded by j.p. morgan because the other clubs weren’t interested in having him as a member.  maybe i’ll start my own club too.

a selection of great shots by matt.

and here’s the lovely note that Jen’s mom sent to us the next day:

Matt,

You hit a home run!!!! Everyone was commenting on how you went of your way for every single picture. I can’t even begin to tell you how pleased I am. I knew we would be, but you are really amazing. You were an absolute delight to work with. Your personality was incredible – everyone fell in love with you. Sorry about your pants [they split], but just another example of how you rolled with the punches and just kept on smiling. You made it the best day in my life!

If you ever need a referral, send them my way. Great Job, can’t wait to see more!

Fondly,
Kim

p.s. If you have a counter on that website, check it. I bet we will break a record. I have people forwarding it to friends of friends of friends. :)  We hope to be your biggest fans!

working in anguilla – pros and cons of destination events

so people are always asking about what it’s like shooting destination events.  most people don’t realize that photographing destination weddings are quite a bit of work.  first of all you’re traveling internationally with a ton of gear – in this case 5 camera bodies, 9 lenses, 2 supercharged laptops each weighing about a ton, 6 flashes, 2 tripods, lightstands, sandbags (empty), 2 power packs, a printer, tons of batteries, chargers, lights, weatherproof cases to carry it all, etc. etc.

then there’s international work permits (which require not only approval from the foreign government but in this case we also had to get certificates of good conduct from the NYPD which meant fingerprints, background checks, etc. etc. to prove we were good people (so in case you were wondering, we don’t have criminal records).

of course it’s true;  there is an upside…

B&C on the beach

great weather… although i did thoroughly dunk my $10,000 1DsMkIII and 70-200 lens into the damp sand moments after this shot was taken.

bd shooting on anguilla

but it is work.

here Kim grabbed a shot of me taking 3 seconds to calculate how many more seconds before the sun broke through the clouds, how many stops I’ll have to open up to compensate for the backlight, how many minutes we have before the sun falls below the horizon, whether or not gen’s hair will blow in her face if I have her stand over there facing that way, and how wet we can let her dress get before it gets too droopy looking….

And of course, most importantly, how can i make sure that Gen and Steven are having a good time while we shoot because without that – everything else is for naught.

we walk

I also wanted to give a special thanks to Helen Richardson www.anguillaweddingplanner.com who made sure everything went smoothly for everyone. She was not only the driving force behind all of the wonderful events we attended in Anguilla, but she made a complex weeklong series of things to do and places to be effortless for everyone.  Thanks Helen!

the nigerian gele

no matter how many weddings you see – all the different ceremonies and traditions -  there’s always something new to learn.

for instance, one of the really cool things about gen and steve’s wedding is the breadth of cultures that came together.  Gen is malaysian and Steve is nigerian and the guests were from across the globe.

As guests began arriving for a tea ceremony you couldn’t help but notice the really unusual headresses that the ladies were all wearing.  they were huge and colorful and stiff as a board and they were perfectly coordinated with their outfits.   turns out the head wraps were a nigerian tradition called a gele, a yoruban word.  gele are not preassembled but each is individually wrapped or should i say sculpted on the wearer.  talk about an art form.

nigerian gele in silo

the property at cap juluca is pretty big so to get around they have golf carts parked all over the place and you just grab one, hop in and go wherever you need.  can you beat golf carts and gele?

just wanted to get up a few more shots of the beautiful Genevieve in Anguilla…

There’s just so much great stuff that I want to share from Gen and Steve’s Anguilla wedding that every time I work with the images, I find more I want to share…

Gen on the beach

it almost looks like the shot above and the one below were taken on different days but the entire session on the beach lasted only about 35 minutes.

the bouquet - on the beach in anguilla

Some places are so magical that even when you put down the bouquet for a sec so the bride can use two hands you’ve got something worth shooting.

Kim's shot

the above image was shot by Kim, who, not only is an awesome Studio Manager, but she’s a great photographer as well.

this shot below was actually a candid moment from the wedding day itself but i thought it complemented the shot above nicely.

the boat trip to prickly pear – anguilla

so i wanted to share a bit more from Genevieve and Stevens’ wedding in anguilla.

we were there for about 5 days of festivities and day 2 was a boat trip to a remote island called prickly pear island.

what’s there?  nothing but sandy white beaches and a single beach restaurant where the boat crew cooks and serves lunch  – what a sweet way to spend the day!

of course for those forgoing the launch, getting to the restaurant is half the fun….

genevieve + steven – the wedding day in anguilla

gen and steven’s wonderful reception was held at Cuisinart.  a stunning location for our portraits as well.

gen and steven at cuisinart - anguilla

destination events are great because you get to spend so much time with your clients that you really get to know each other and there’s a whole ‘nother level of comfort that you get to that really shows in the images.

ahhh… anguilla…

been getting lots of requests to post some images from our recent wedding in anguilla so I thought I’d give everyone a small taste.

genevieve wore this wonderful dress by monique lhuillier and these shots are from a session we did at shoal bay on the day following her wedding .
