i learned something really interesting the other day when one of my potential clients (now officially a client) was viewing my portfolio. they told me that they were under the impression that many of my images had been set up or staged when in fact, they were 100% true photojournalism. so i thought it best to clarify this. with the exception of the brief period of time that we’re out “taking pictures”, I don’t direct, “suggest”, or “do that again” to anything.
case in point is this shot from liliana and jeff’s wedding.
in this shot liliana is pinning her “something blue” inside her dress and her bridesmaids, sitting on the bed, are reflected in the mirror. this looks like some painfully crafted set up – with each bridesmaid being told precisely where and how to sit when in fact, this is exactly how the scene presented itself. the world does magical things on its own if you just keep your eyes open and react quickly enough to capture it.

below, the flower girl is trying unsuccessfully to make jeff disappear.

ok, for this one I told people where to stand…

one of those perfect summer days in central park and i had the pleasure of shooting michelle and chris just before sunset.
venice anyone?

Thought you all might enjoy the feature article that was written about us in this month’s issue of Professional Photographer magazine.
I’ve got to say, I like that the editor called us “The must-have experience for the in-crowd!” That’s not a bad goal…

Click on the thumbnail below to download a readable pdf of the article. Enjoy!

Want to know what’s really strange for a wedding photographer? Shooting a wedding in the place where you got married.
Ten years ago this month, Celeste and I got married at The Pleasantdale Chateau. It’s an old estate about 3 minutes from where I grew up and my friends and I used to sneak around their extensive property when we were kids. So when it became a event space it was a natural choice for us.
Madeleine and Dean are such a handsome couple – it was a perfect setting for them as well.

Madeleine and a moment of zen.

Although it was raining most of the day, you can see it didn’t dampen Madeleine’s radiance.

Fortunately, the Chateau has some awesome places to shoot indoors.

Connecting the poolhouse to the main house is the garden room.

I mean, if you’re stuck pretty much inside, you couldn’t ask for a better location.

Caught Hank Lane’s flying dual trumpet player in midair at the end of the night.

Wanted to share a wonderful wedding that my associates Matt and Chris shot out on the North Fork at Bedell Cellars.

I love this shot of Danielle’s Mom. Now THATs a moment!

Bedell Cellars is a beautiful place to have a wedding. The vineyards offer such a great place for cool portraits.

Danielle and Christian are such a fun couple.

And Bedell has this wonderful back porch – perfect for that summer wedding out on the island.

And of course, who better to do your Hamptons/North Fork flowers than the amazing Claire Bean. She’s one of our all time faves. Her work is elegantly simple yet always stunning. She knows floral colors like no one.

Thanks to Matt and Chris for doing such an outstanding job!
