Fine china? You registered for fine china?

Ok, don’t get me wrong. Fine china is… well… fine. You get to pull it out of the closet a few times a year and your friends get to put their food on it. That’s nice. It keeps the table linens that you also registered for from getting dirty so I suppose it’s quite handy in fact. Which makes it more practical than the pretty glass objet d’art that you also registered for. You really only registered for THAT because you decided that you couldn’t register for something you REALLY wanted – like that giant lcd tv, or that stereo or those shoes because, quite honestly, that’s just not cool and you needed to put more things in that price range on the registry anyway. How handy.

Hmmmm, if only there were another option. If only you could register for something you would really like… something you wanted that would be cool to ask for… something that would stand the test of time – an heirloom in fact, and something that (gasp) would be meaningful to give! Whatever could that be?

Well – it’s officially here. The Registry at brian dorsey studios.

Put brian dorsey studios on your list of places you’re registered and your family and friends can contribute to something meaningful. Totally win/win. They give something they feel good about giving and you get something you actually want. Something your children will admire and thank you for someday instead of saying, “What were they thinking when they asked for this thing?”

We provide gift certificates in any for any amount between $100 and $5000. They can be left open or earmarked for albums, prints, future portrait sessions, etc. Beats a vase, no?

It’s going to be like EZ-Pass. A pretty simple idea – yet really useful. We’re all going to ask ourselves down the road why didn’t we think of this sooner?

And of course, we give you a really nice gift certificate for presenting to the couple.

katrina + taylor – the wedding day

This was the first of two weekend weddings in a row for us up in Rhode Island. Somehow the Ocean State was channeling me.

This weekend was Katrina + Taylor’s wedding in the absolutely charming area known as Watch Hill. Their ceremony at the Watch Hill Chapel and their reception at the Misquamicut Club were wonderfully old world. Charm and elegant simplicity were the order of the day and were expertly coordinated by Jen Brinton. Katrina selected a wonderfully diaphanous Vera Wang that looked just great flowing in the ocean breeze.

Here Katrina pins the boutonniere on her dad, James Courter.

Katrina and Taylor rode off from the ceremony in the family’s sweet fire-engine red convertible Ford roadster. (I’m guessing it’s about a 1929 or so).

What I didn’t know was that Katrina and Taylor had originally met as two-year-olds at an Election Night dinner the evening Katrina’s father had won his 1982 run for Congress. Of course, Taylor too comes from a long lineage of political leadership. His great-grandfather was Governor of New York from 1915-1918 and his mother, Christie Todd-Whitman was Governor of New Jersey from 1994-2001.

For those of you who missed Katrina and Taylor’s big writeup in The New York Times… check it out.

Get with it guys… have us photograph your proposal!

Ok guys, we gotta start thinking ahead a little more.

Let’s see – one of the biggest moments in a young lady’s life… the one she’s fantasized about since she was little; one she’ll tell all her friends about and recount incalculable times for the rest of her life… in fact, you yourself have been planning it for months – carrying this ring around in your pocket – waiting for the right moment – the stars align and you drop to your knee and in this one moment – these two lives are forever intertwined…

Why the heck isn’t there someone taking pictures?

Hello?

And you want her to think you put thought into this?

This weekend we finally hooked up with a guy who had the foresight to hire us to photograph his proposal. There we were, lying in ambush, Mr. Thoughtful and his unsuspecting fiancee-to-be in the sights of our 200mm lens. He goes down on his knee, out comes the ring and we’re there like CIA operatives capturing it all for them – so they can relive the shock, the joy, the awe over and over. For having the foresight to bring us along he of course gets extra bonus points from every woman with whom she shares the story for the rest of her life (starting with her Mom – right then and there).

Friends of people considering engagement – don’t let your friends leave the bonus points on the table. This is a no-brainer. Be a good friend and smack some sense into them and have them call or write us BEFORE they propose. 212.227.6772 info@briandorseystudios.com

Men, she’s going to think you’re brilliant for having thought of it. And we promise not to give away the secret.

Great Stuff You Didn’t Know You Needed To See

I”m so glad I invented the internet. It’s really useful for things like killing a half day.

The funny thing is that when you kill a half a day online when all is said and done there’s really only a few things that were worth seeing.

So to spare you the expense of your own half day of surfing – just look at these things

OK, Go on treadmills…

And this kid rockin’ out on Pachelbel’s Canon…

The Keynote Speaker @ Brazil’s 3rd annual Photo & Imaging Congress

Recently, I had the privelege of being the Keynote Speaker at Brazil’s 3rd Annual Photo and Imaging Congress in Sao Paolo. It was my wife Celeste’s and my first trip to Brazil and we were fortunate enough to spend some time traveling and getting to know the country and the people. We managed to squeeze in a couple of days in Rio, a little time on the famed beach at Ipanema (EVERYONE there is tall and tan and young and lovely), and left enough time for Caiparinha’s every evening. Rio Rocks!

If you are looking for a destination wedding location that’s really something different, check out the Copacabana Palace Hotel in Rio. As in THE Copacabana. Amazingly majestic. Very cool.

The photographers attending the conference in Sao Paolo were a fantastic group – amazingly warm and welcoming to us all. The Q&A section of the presentation was especially fun…imagine having everything you and the audience said translated into Portuguese and English respectively…. in real time! ….cool.

The best part of the trip? After my presentation, I had about 15 people swarm the stage asking to have their picture taken with me – like I was some sort of celebrity. That’s me… Mr. Celebrity Wedding Photographer from NYC. Really, it was so nice. I guess they really liked my work. Go figure. I personally wouldn’t want to have a picture taken of me with me. But that’s me.

If you’re brushing up on your Portuguese and want to see what I look like after a week of fried cheese dough products, fruit drinks and caiparinhas you can check it out. I’m the guy obviously mislabled “The International Attraction”.

kavita + jason – the double wedding day

It took us a loooong time to edit and develop Kavita and Jason’s wedding day images. There were lots of them. We shot them for 16 hours on their wedding day – basically two full weddings – a Hindu ceremony in the morning and a Jewish ceremony in the evening. We’re talking two dressings, two sets of formals, two ceremonies, two receptions. How Jason and Kavita managed to keep themselves looking fresh and happy going through it all I have no idea. They were just great.
