personal work – a tree that has nothing to do with weddings

what can i say – i found this picture in my archives that i took awhile ago in hawaii and thought it was cool…

so i thought i’d share it.

creativity series #2 – engagement session in brooklyn

this image was just awarded junebug’s 2013 Best of the Best Engagement Photographs Awards.

Maia and James and I went over to Brooklyn so that we could get the manhattan skyline in their photographs.  (that’s the worst part of living in manhattan – you can’t see the manhattan skyline)

Under the manhattan bridge you really get a sense of the scale of these monumental public works.  in one way it really puts us in our place – we are but tiny things in this world – but at the same time it reminds me that we’re also the most interesting.

Wedding Day Tips – Makeup – How to do it right for your photos

many brides are advised to have especially heavy makeup applied on the wedding day for the benefit of their photographs. friends and even many makeup artists know people on television spend a lot of time in makeup – the lighting on set is harsh and television cameras very unforgiving and of course there’s no touching up after the fact so heavy makeup is the rule.  but if these people went out on the street afterwards without removing that makeup, you’d think it looks crazy.

a wedding day is nothing like being on a TV set.

you’re among your family and friends out in the real world.  you’ve put a lot of effort and planning into looking your best. so when it comes to makeup – stick with that idea.

look your best – the way you want to look.  please don’t feel compelled to do anything special for your pictures.  rather than feeling self-conscious about heavy makeup,

you’ll feel wonderful about the way you look – and THAT is what makes for great pictures.

Great Moments #4 – just coming to pick her up

sometimes we can’t believe that a shot came together the way it did ourselves.  this one, actually from a mitzvah makes me laugh every time i come across it.

i can’t really imagine what’s going on under that sheet,  but as the gentleman seems to indicate, it’s probably questionable.  especially when you look at that ghost’s’ feet. and what’s up with those pants?

Great Details Series #3 – 3 Reflections on Louboutin

We come across some pretty awesome shoes in this business.  The challenge is to showcase them all in an interesting way using the environment or details that are at hand and somehow related to the event or day.

But then after you’ve taken the shots you have to decide between them – and that can be hard too.  Which of these shots of the bride’s christian louboutin’s on her piano is your fave?

Great Moments Series #3 – extinguishing stress

Those moments just before walking down the aisle are stressful for many people.  Taking a little chill/zen moment can help to  ’extinguish the fire’ of that stress.

This moment of Dad taking a moment to breathe while his daughter leans her head on this shoulder really conveys that feeling of zen and the connection they share.   It makes me almost want to breathe along with him.

Of course the irony of the Fire Extinguisher closet takes the shot one step further again.  I think it’s really representative of our style – as one of our clients recently put it, “…your photos are real, honest candid moments – and they’re beautiful -but there’s often something else too – something obviously well considered –  that makes them even that much more special.  That’s what takes them from being great photographs to being works of art.”

The Creativity Series #1

Kim recently took a brilliantly executed image of a groom getting ready.  In addition to getting great moments we’re always trying to find creative ways to capture those moments.

This one makes me stop and consider it every time I look at it.

Great Details Series – #2 – The Black Wedding Cake

I got a call from my really good friend Ron Ben-Israel one Thursday morning.  [Background: Ron is one of the most renowned cake designers in the world and is the host of Food Network's 'Sweet Genius'.]   He’s even more excited than he normally is and says to me, in that wonderful Israeli accent of his, “Brian, you are shooting ze wedding of one of my clients zis weekend – and i wanted to let you know zat I’m very excited about ze cake.”

Now I’ve shot probably more than 50  of Ron’s cakes over the years – and every single one is uniquely amazing in some way.  But the last time he called me to talk about a specific cake was when he was doing a cake that was a 6 foot tall replica of The Plaza Hotel for the hotel’s 100th Anniversary – so I know this is something special.

“ It’s my first black wedding cake!” he says.   Now I’m having a bit of trouble picturing this as ‘weddingy’ – but I know that if he’s this excited, it’s because he has succeeded.   And if anyone could pull off a black wedding cake – it’s him.

So here you have it – Ron’s first black wedding cake.

Awesome.

Now of course it’s going to be all the rage…

Great Moments Series – #2 – The Look of Love/The Feeling of Love

We take many photographs that capture the love that two people share – it’s kinda in our job description.  But sometimes during a wedding something really special happens.

It’s only lasts a split second and you don’t know when it’ll come  so you had better be ready for it.  But when you see it,  you know it.  The and bride and groom look at each other in a way that touches you right through the camera.   It’s the  feeling of love.

Now maybe I feel it especially strongly in this shot because I know the bride’s personality and she’s just that type of glowing person.  But every time i look at this picture , i think I can actually feel something.  It’s more than the look of love – this shot gives me the feeling of love.

Just a great moment for me.

Great Detail Series #1 – The Winter Bouquet

We come across some AMAZING details in the incredible weddings that we get to shoot.  We thought you might like it if we shared them so you could get some inspiration for your own bouquets and decor and other details.
